It is a pleasure to introduce my work to the public through my website.  Compiling and organizing years of work and evolving styles is an ongoing challenge, but one that I have grown to enjoy as I have eased into the 21st Century, much slower than many artists I must admit... I have two websites for your viewing pleasure, www.paintingbystar.com and www.teachingbystar.com, where I have my Education Portfolio and history as a Chicago muralist posted.  In addition, you can read my Blog posts and keep up with my career as a Teaching Artist.  My future plans include finding a job as an Art Teacher, since I just finished my Art Teacher Certification at Northeastern IL University, finish the oil paintings in my studio and post them online, market myself and land a gallery to represent me, and continue showing my work locally with friends, colleagues, non for profit arts organizations, pop up art galleries and community exhibits.  I am an avid traveler and would like to go an a SCUBA diving trip soon, revisit NYC and the amazing art scene there, plan a summer trip to Spain to study the Spanish Masters and develop my interests in bird watching, gardening, swimming, illustration and printmaking.

My artist bio and artist statement:
about me*

new work     very recently i have had a tremendous creative burst and have been painting, creating abstract space scapes, writing hieroglyphics and layering text, falling in love with birds, swimming, nature walks and relationships.  it seems my painting is evolving as my own life grows and changes.  i am very happy with my most recent paintings i truly hope you enjoy them, gracias!

"night swim   oil on canvas

"night swim"   this artwork has gone through so many evolutions that i barely remembered how i started it.  over the years i added one detail at a time, really studying every decision.  most of my paintings take years to complete.  i am not sure why i take my time, but i enjoy every layer bit by bit.  This used to be called "moon" but it seemed unfinished.  i had a vision of a whale's tail and moonlit sea spray...   finished in 2013.

"Great Blue heron in humboldt park"  oil on canvas

"Great Blue heron in humboldt park"  i have enjoyed bird watching for a few years now and it has become a daily affair, me making time to notice the birds, listen to their songs and squabbles and catch rare and large birds in my eyesight.  the actual background for this painting evolved about 10 years ago as i was interested in camouflage as  a war symbol.  the background i loved but nothing connected to it.  after visiting my father and family in florida and falling in love with the large swampy lake in their backyard and all of the birds that live in it, i decided to start blending my love for abstract conscience colored backgrounds and mother nature.  i take walks in humboldt park a lot with my dog and couldn't believe it when i saw a huge great blue heron just take off from one side of the lagoon, flew over humboldt blvd. and landed in the other side of the lagoon by the field house.    finished in 2012.

Picture

"mermaid"  oil on canvas

"mermaid"  one of the reoccurring themes in my work is the raft alone in the water or streaming through space.  in these waters, imagined the clear waters of the tropical world and a mermaid headed towards the raft.  i wanted to create a mystery,  is she swimming towards her lover the fisherman, or is she the owner of the boat, returning to human form?    finished in 2012.

"stork meteor showers"  oil on canvas

"stork meteor showers"  after my personal encounter with this wood stork in my father's backyard, i started to have repeated dreams of him and of other birds i have seen.  birds are especially symbolic to me as a woman and as an artist.  i believe that birds carry messages and communicate.  the meteor showers and waterfalls represent good luck and good life.    finished in 2012.

"universe" oil on canvas

"universe"  I really love this painting.  i loved painting this.  it wasn't an intentional nod to jackson pollack, more of a liberating approach to dots, yods, pixie dust, color bursts, star systems and constellations. layering colors and patterns with lines and splatters has created depth and the core, previously a womb, remained empty.  while in my heart, i still imagine the upside down fetus waiting to be born, instead i left the core empty so to speak, really channeling the source, the raw possibility of anything.    finished in 2010.
